Raised in a traditional Muslim community in the remote island of Lamu, Kenya, Subira’s overbearing mother wants her to follow tradition, learn household chores and aim to be a good housewife, just like all the rest in her society. Only her liberal father believes that she is meant for greater things.

He is killed in a boat accident, throwing Subira’s life in a tumult. Upon coming of age, she is married off to an upper-class Nairobi family. Will she have the courage and inner strength to take on her dreams?
